Our Cornell LGR chapter recently had the privilege of hosting Angela Herrara, Cornell University’s Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions. On March 17 Herrara spoke with the students, answering their multitude of questions not only about Cornell but also about admissions and many others running the gamut of the college process. She plays a role in student admission decisions and is an expert in the admission process at many colleges in the U.S., providing those in the Cornell program an invaluable behind-the-scenes look into college admittance.

The highlight of the evening came at the end of the question and answer session, when Herrara offered every student, all 50 in this program, a business card saying, “If you would like to apply to Cornell, E-mail me. I will give you a fee waiver for the application fee.” The room broke out in cheers. Many LGR students have financial concerns about application fees, and this offer is very welcome gift. Afterward, one student said with the waiver he can now apply to one more “reach school.”

The generous freebie is certainly welcome. But it is because her expertise in financial aid information AND particular types of aid that Herrera has already been invited back for a one-hour session.

Let’s Get Ready would like to formally introduce you to our newest program, Fordham.

If the record high number of director applications—50—is any indication, we are certain this program will be a standout. From the massive pool of college student applicants, two sophomores, Jen Prevete and Gabe Agostini, were chosen to lead as site directors. Jen and Gabe wasted no time, diving right in, and were able to recruit all their coaches in one week!

Thirty-five students make up the inaugural LGR- Fordham class, which is generously housed at the Fordham Leadership Academy and supervised by our terrific partner Karen Evans. These students hail from schools that are in the Fordham Partnership School Organization, Fordham sponsored high schools, as well as several other area schools.

The program officially began a few weeks ago, and the students and coaches are engaged and excited. In addition to normal classroom activities, they will be taking their second diagnostic test on Fordham’s campus and following the test that with a Fordham tour. A plan for a second college trip is also underway.

Stay tuned for more excellent news to come from this site.

The Let’s Get Ready Framingham, Mass. program recently kicked off its spring semester. The program has all of the LGR staples: Two site directors, check. Coaches, check. And our highest program enrollment yet with more than 50 high school students, check. But this time there is also something new to the Framingham site: men…males…guys…dudes… however you want to say it, this program now has it.

The Framingham program has long been run through a partnership with Wellesley College — Wellesley being an excellent liberal arts college for women. But as this LGR program serves high school students of both genders we are excited to be adding some Babson College gentlemen into the mix. The importance and positive impact of male mentors has been studied and Let’s Get Ready is excited to bring their great influence to this program and the lives of our students. (Babson is co-ed and we are also excited about partnering with Babson ladies as well.)
The spring program will be run by our two amazing site directors, one each from Wellesley and Babson, and LGR is excited by what might pop up from this new partnership — new dimensions, different ideas and perspectives.

Let’s Get Ready is now ready and excited to start our spring programs. After an unprecedented number of student applications, we are thrilled to be finally kicking off all our sites and are especially proud to be rolling out our newest editions: the Fordham program and the first spring program at Northeastern University.

Our veteran directors have been anticipating their return to coordinate and oversee programs and our new directors are itching to help mold and guide their site, and create their own unique imprint.

Also, parents and siblings have been in attendance for upcoming parent-student orientations, allowing us to connect with families and tackle the SAT and college acceptance on multiple fronts.

In the upcoming weeks students will be matched with their coaches at a fantastic 5 to 1 ratio. We are so excited that this will give each student the tailoring and individual attention they need for success. And after hours of coach training, our coaches too are raring to take on their students and apply what they have learned to the LGR classroom.

As our spring programs get underway, we are already getting ready to look even further ahead to the May 1 SAT, which in only 10 weeks away. Everyone is on their mark and set to make this the best Let’s Get Ready semester yet.
